FALL 2007 COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT!
Music 168G: Other Issues in Ethnomusicology
Cognitive Ethnomusicology
Instructor: Asst. Prof. John Hajda, Music
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 to 12:15 p.m.
Music 1145
Enrollment Code: 35329
Units: 4
Cognitive Ethnomusicology, as the name implies, is a recently developed
subdiscipline of cross-cultural ethnomusicology that focuses on music perception
and cognition as manifestations of and influenced by cultural contexts.
Fundamental cognitive issues are addressed, such as memory, attention, emotion,
auditory perception and categorization, but without the assumptions of presumed
laws and systems that have been developed almost exclusively under the umbrella
of Western art music.
This highly interdisciplinary course will focus on a basic grounding of music
cognition research methods and applications of those methods to a variety of
musical cultures. Class activities will include class experiments, guest
presentations and student-led discussions.
If you have questions about this course, please contact Prof. Hajda at
<a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="mailto:jhajda@music.ucsb.edu">jhajda@music.ucsb.edu</a>.
NOTE: Due to last-second changes, this class is not listed correctly in the
printed Schedule of Classes.
