Call for Nominations Deadline: April 6, 2007 The Chancellors Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Research are made annually at UC Santa Barbara to recognize: A graduating senior with distinction as an undergraduate researcher A faculty member with a distinguished record of mentoring undergraduate research The purpose of the awards is twofold: to provide recognition to both students and faculty who have distinguished themselves through their excellence in and contribution to undergraduate research, and to encourage others to become involved in these types of research efforts. The awards also serve as a special recognition of the universitys initiatives to improve the educational experience of undergraduates and increase the visibility of student research at the University of California. The recipients, to be announced at spring commencement ceremonies, will be honored with a certificate of recognition and a monetary award. The Academic Senate Committee on Undergraduate Academic Programs and Policy will evaluate the nominations. Guidelines for Selection and Nomination of Candidates Each academic department, program and organized research unit is invited to select and nominate one undergraduate student who is a graduating senior and/or one faculty member, using the guidelines outlined below. The two nominees need not be involved in the same project. Previous recipients of the award are not eligible (see recipient list). The two awards may not necessarily be made to candidates from the same department. Nominations should be prepared separately, even if the chosen nominees are engaged in a mentor/student relationship at the time of the competition. In selecting nominees, please consider the following criteria as it relates to your respective candidates. The nomination and support letters must describe the undergraduate research project in which the faculty and the student are actually involved. FACULTY MEMBERUNDERGRADUATE STUDENTIs the faculty known to involve undergraduates on his/her projects, or to supervise students' independent and honors work? Does he/she actively recruit undergraduate research assistants? How significant to the success of the project was the student's intellectual or creative input? Did the student, on his/her own initiative, seek out a faculty sponsor?Has the collaboration resulted in any publications, submissions, or presentations at professional meetings in which the contributions of undergraduates were acknowledged?Has the student, alone or in collaboration, published or submitted his/her work, presented it at a professional meeting, or is definitely leading to such results very shortly? What is the faculty's record of undergraduate researchers' progress into high-caliber graduate programs? What evidence is there of the student's development, whether academic, professional or personal, as a result of the research experience? How much time does the faculty devote to supervising students' individual as well as group projects? What is the faculty's record for supervising students' independent 99, 199, 199RA, or similar courses that are not part of the normal teaching load? How much time (length or amount) has the student invested in the project or projects? Was academic credit, through independent study or related courses, a significant part of the benefits sought by the student?Overall, what distinguishes this faculty as your department's or programs nominee for the Chancellors Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research?Overall, what distinguishes this undergraduate as the graduating senior your department or program is nominating for the Chancellors Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research? Procedures for Nomination Each nomination must include a nomination letter from the Department Chair or Program Director. This letter must not exceed two typewritten pages per candidate and must be accompanied by two additional relevant support letters. The nomination and support letters must describe the undergraduate research project in which the faculty and the student are actually involved. Addenda should be limited and must clearly corroborate the nomination. In making student nominations please include a statement from the student nominee, discussing the relevance of the research/creative activity on their education and future plans. A copy of a major research paper or similar piece of work by the student is also recommended. Submit the original and 2 copies of the nomination materials to the College of Letters and Science Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) Office, 2105 North Hall, for review by the Committee on Undergraduate Academic Programs and Policies. Nominations must be received by 4:00p.m. on Friday, April 6, 2007. The awards consist of a certificate of commendation along with a monetary award from the Office of the Chancellor.
