<pre>Dear Undergraduate Advisors,
Please give the announcement below the widest distribution possible via your
respective departmental undergraduate listservs.
This has proven to be an extremely interesting opportunity for students.
Last year, approximately 40 undergraduate and graduate students from various
disciplines across the campus participated, with great success.
Thank you very much for your kind assistance in this matter.
With appreciation and best regards,
Nancy Kawalek

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Students,
We are looking for additional students who are interested in reading scripts
and learning to write professional analyses - or coverage, as it's known in
the industry - of those scripts.
Writing coverage is a highly employable skill in Hollywood - and one that
pays well.
You will be taught the skills needed to analyze and write coverage of
screenplays and plays.
In addition, you will be eligible for 1 or 2 units of Independent Studies
course credit. (Number of credits depends on number of scripts read.)
If you are interested in becoming a script reader, you will need to attend
one (only one) of the following workshops, in which you'll be taught how to
analyze scripts and write coverage:
Monday, March 5th at 8:00 p.m. in Ellison Hall, Room 1714
OR
Wednesday, March 7th at 7:30 p.m. in Ellison Hall, Room 1710
OR
Friday, March 9th at 3:30 p.m. in Ellison Hall, Room 1714
OR
Friday, March 9th at 5:00 p.m. in Ellison Hall, Room 1714
You will need to reserve a space in one of these workshops in advance. To do
so, please e-mail Bo Bell, Assistant to the STAGE Competition, at:
<a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="mailto:stage.competition@gmail.com">stage.competition@gmail.com</a>
When you e-mail Bo, please tell him:
1) which day & time you'll be attending, and
2) please specify your academic standing (e.g., freshman, sophomore, junior,
senior, etc.) and your major.
Please also read the information that follows below to find out details
about how much time is involved, how much time you'll be given to read the
scripts, receiving credit for your work, etc.
Please don't hesitate to contact Bo if you have any questions. We'll look
forward to hearing from you, and thank you for your interest.
Sincerely,
Bo Bell, Assistant
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT BECOMING A SCRIPT READER:
1) Regarding Course Credit and Related Details:
To receive 1 unit of Independent Study course credit, you will need to read
5 scripts and write satisfactory coverage on all of them (approximately 1-2
pages each). It may be possible to elect to read more than 5 scripts and
therefore get more credit, at the rate of 1 credit for every 5 scripts read.
How much time one spends on this endeavor depends on how quickly one reads
and writes, so it may take each of you a different amount of time to do the
same job, depending on your individual speed. However, please note that this
is not a contest in speed - it's a contest to find the very best script, so
you will have to read the scripts carefully and write your coverage
thoughtfully. All coverage will be reviewed by Professor Nancy Kawalek
(Dept. of Film & Media Studies and Media Arts & Technology).
Some of you may not be interested in receiving course credit, and/or you may
only wish to read 1 or 2 scripts. This is perfectly fine.
2) When You'll Receive Scripts & When They're Due Back:
You'll receive your first script immediately after the training workshop.
All scripts must be read and all coverage completed by April 27, 2007, which
is the end of the 4th week of spring quarter.
3) The Purpose of Your Reading Scripts
The scripts you'll be reading are those that have been submitted to the
STAGE International Script Competition, a script competition offering a
$10,000 prize for the best play about science and technology. Please note
that no particular knowledge of science and/or technology is needed to
become a script reader, and that you'll use the same skills to write
coverage of these plays as you would use to write coverage of screenplays.
The Competition is a collaboration between UCSB's Professional Artists Lab
(in the Department of Film & Media Studies and Media Arts & Technology) and
the California NanoSystems Institute. For more information about this
competition, go to <a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="http://www.cnsi.ucsb.edu/stage/">www.cnsi.ucsb.edu/stage/</a>.
At least 30 students from arts and science disciplines across the campus are
already engaged in reading scripts for course credit. Due to an overwhelming
response to the STAGE Script Competition, we are in need of even more
students to read and analyze scripts.
Generating Exploration) International Script Competition, check out the
