Land Trust for Santa Barbara County and local landscape contractor The
Native Landscape have several paid internship positions available
Winter quarter. For the past four years the UCSB Shoreline
Preservation Fund has awarded grants to the Land Trust that have made
possible the restoration of close to an acre of land at the Coronado
Butterfly Preserve in the Ellwood neighborhood of Goleta. Over 5,000
native plants representing forty species have been planted, and over
forty UCSB students have participated in the projects. With funding
for another year, the contractor and crew will transform about 1/4 acre
of non-native weeds into thriving, self-sustaining coastal sage scrub,
grassland and oak woodland plant communities. The internship
will provide students training in vegetation monitoring, native plant
propagation, methods of eradication of non-native weeds, installation
of nursery stock and project maintenance. Work will take place every
Monday during Winter quarter and into Spring quarter as needed.
Morning and afternoon shifts are available to accommodate
any class schedule. Interns will be paid a $250 stipend at the
completion of thirty hours of work. Students may instead earn one unit
of academic credit through the Environmental Studies program or
EEMB and Geography department internship programs. Volunteers are
always welcome. Site work will begin as soon as the crew is hired and
hopefully before the next rain, so if you are interested please call
