This year's Undergraduate Research Colloquium is being held, Thursday, May 15, 11:30 to 2:00 p.m. in the Corwin Pavilion. This year's event is showcasing 129 poster presentations. We are excited to be able to provide the campus and local community with the opportunity to see firsthand the types of research and creative projects undertaken by UCSB undergraduates from all three colleges. Projects from all colleges, and disciplines - the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and social sciences - will be presented. We hope you can join us at this exciting event. In past years a reception was held immediately following the event to honor all participants and their mentors. Regrettably, due to budgetary constrictions, we must cancel the reception. We hope you will still attend this event to view the amazing efforts by our undergraduate students in academic research and creative activities. We hope to see you there! *************************************************** Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities College of Letters & Science University of California Santa Barbara, CA 93106-2085 www.Ltsc.ucsb.edu/urca (805) 893-2319 (805) 893-7780 fax From biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu Mon May 5 16:09:33 2008 From: biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu (Biology Undergraduate List) Date: Mon, 05 May 2008 16:09:33 -0700 Subject: [Biology-U-L] [Fwd: [BIOnews] Help Protect Plover Chicks at COPR] Message-ID: <481F93AD.5010809@lifesci.ucsb.edu> Snowy plover chicks are hatching again at Coal Oil Point Reserve! Our last count on Friday, May 2nd, revealed 10 plover nests and 3 chicks (hatched Monday, April 28th. The snowy plover is a threatened species. Nesting on the open sand makes them very vulnerable. Often their eggs and chicks are at risk of being stepped on or destroyed by unknowing beach users or off leash dogs. The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in 2001 to assist with the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, and to raise awareness in the community of the importance of the preservation of this species and its habitat. The commitment of each Plover Docent volunteer has contributed toward the success of recovering the nesting population at Coal Oil Point. Each docent plays a crucial role in the protection of the plovers by educating beach users about this threatened species and what they can do to improve the chances for the plovers' survival. Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve. Can you spare 2 hours per week? If so, you could make a significant contribution as a Volunteer Docent or an Intern for the Snowy Plover Docent Program. JOIN US! Natural History is the broadest study of science and attempts to tie together observations of the natural world into a single interwoven fabric. As such, the knowledge base of natural history has grown beyond a single category of study and has been divided into smaller and smaller and more and more isolated disciplines. It is not uncommon that professional biologists study a single organism in a laboratory, far removed from its natural habitat. The Saturdaze Scholarship for Natural History Research supports the broader view. Natural History is accessible to all who love and enjoy observing nature. In his essay on the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin, as a naturalist, wrote that . . . "It is interesting to contemplate an entangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent on each other in so complex a manner, have all been produced by laws acting around us." Who among us has not contemplated nature and been inspired to learn about the connectedness within diversity? In this sense, natural history has attracted not only the scientist, but the artist and poet; natural history has become the romantic science. The romance of natural history stems from our desire to relate to the natural world, to regain a connectedness to it, and to preserve its diversity. Saturdaze has partnered with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and has funded a scholarship to encourage research that helps to explain one or another "entangled bank". The Saturdaze Scholarship for Natural History Research rewards exceptional students attempting to discover interactions in nature.
