The microbiology faculty at UNLV and the Desert Research Institute have 
received NSF funding for a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates 
(REU) program in Environmental Microbiology.  This grant provides 
students with the opportunity to join a research team for a 10 week 
period.  Students receive a $4000 stipend, round trip airfare, and 
housing in a UNLV dormitory.  I cordially invite UCSB MCDB students to 
apply.

 Mentors have projects in the following areas of research:

.         Adaptation of /Pseudomonas fluorescens /to Diverse Soils

.         Biology of /Shigella/ /flexneri/

.         Magnetotaxis of Bacteria

.         Microbial Ecology of Aquatic Ecosystems

.         Mutagenesis in Nutrient Limiting Conditions

.         Nutrient Cycling

.         Sporulation of /Bacillus anthracis/

 I would appreciate if you could direct your biology and biochemistry 
students to the on-line application and list of mentors at

Friday March 16, 2007.
