Subject: [Biology-U-L] Docents Needed at Coal Oil Point
Message-ID: <4782AC80.6010109@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
Volunteer Docents and Interns are needed for the Snowy Plover Docent Program.
The next volunteer training is on Sunday, January 13th, from 9AM-1:30PMPM at
the Cliff House, Coal Oil Point Reserve.
The Western Snowy Plover and CA Least Tern are small shorebirds in need of our
help. Habitat destruction and increased human recreation on beaches have caused
dramatic declines in their populations over the past few decades, leading to
their protection under the Endangered Species Act.
The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in August of 2001 to assist
in the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, and to raise
awareness of the importance of the preservation of this species and its habitat.
We have been successful thus far because the community's support and commitment
to help out.
The program recruits, trains, and organizes volunteers to become Plover Docents.
Each docent plays a crucial role in the protection of the plovers by educating
beach users about this threatened species and how to use the beach responsibly.
Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote
public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the
effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve. The
Docent Commitment is only 2 hours per week after the training.
The SPDP operates at Coal Oil Point Reserve, which lies between Isla Vista and
Ellwood shores near west campus. Our office is located near the beach entrance,
across form the Cliff House. The nearest major cross streets are El Colegio and
Storke Road.

Message-ID: <4782AD09.9070707@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
I have no less than 3 internships I would like filled with Biology students.
There are 3 different internships.
1. A scientific project, we have earlier in similar projects had a
UCSB professor approve the project and therefore allowed the
student to get merit points for graduation. If the student is
interested in such, I hope we can do it again.
2. A support project for our scientific staff. We need a dedicated,
part time person to help us with leiterature searches and later
ordering or copying journal articles. This cannot give merit
points and will be a paid intership.
3. Support for the Lab Assistant. This is routine job functions, but
again paid.
I will be interviewing next week and therefore would like applications
this week, if at all possible. The deadline for application is
tentatively set at January 10, as we need students to act now.
I hope you will be able to submit or forward the advertisements to
prospective student of Biology for me today or tomorrow.
Thanking again for all your help, I hope we can arrange this soon and
then start the students here at Dako.

Seniors in any of the Biological Science majors with an interest in
computational analysis of experimental data, I have two open seats in the course listed below (6 max). If you are
interested in this course, please let me know by the end of today. If you want to enroll, it will
require a special approval for an undergrad to enroll in a grad course
but that is not difficult. In the past, the undergrads generally actually did as
well or better than many of the grad students so don't be intimidated by it
being a grad course.
If you have any questions, please ask.

Subject: [Biology-U-L] Important news about upcoming EAP application
deadlines
Message-ID: <478672A7.2040207@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
The EAP office has announced that they have extended the deadline for
the Academic Planning form. While _*you **must turn in the rest of your
application by the deadline*_, the UCSB EAP office will accept the
Academic Planning form up to two weeks later. If you have questions or
would like to confirm this with the EAP office, please email
or call 893-3763
In order for the Bio Advisors to sign the Academic Planning form for
you, you must fill out some additional forms that show them how going
abroad can be worked into your academic plans. Here's what you need to do:
1. Use the first link below to get a copy of the requirement sheet
for the major you intend to follow. Then, look at the
requirements for your major and where there are subject areas that
give you a choice between several courses, tentatively choose the
courses you think you would like to take. If you don't have a
hard copy of the UCSB general catalog, the third link below will
take you to the on line catalog where you can find course
descriptions.
2. Using the courses you picked and any other major requirements you
still need to complete (including any prep courses), put together
a schedule on the Major Progress Check request form (link #2)
showing how you will work EAP into your quarter by quarter schedule.
* Because you won't usually know what courses you will take
while abroad, try to schedule your electives for the
quarter/quarters you plan to be abroad and schedule your
specific area requirements during the quarters you will be here.
* The Proposed Courses links below (see #4) will help you
schedule the courses you intend to take here at UCSB. Unless
specifically noted, upper division EEMB and MCDB courses are
only offered once a year and in the same quarter year after
year. Be sure to pay close attention to upper division
prerequisites, when noted.
The links below will provide you with the forms and information you need
to plan out your schedule. If the links don't work, or you need further
instructions, stop by LSB 3320 between the hours of 9 and 1130am and
1-3pm and pick them up from one of the peer advisors.
1. Requirement Sheet for
your proposed major
2. Major Progress Check Request Form
3. Course Descriptions
for the EEMB
and MCDB courses
4. Courses by quarter lists:
* EEMB Proposed Courses
(2007-08)
* MCDB Proposed Courses
(2007-08)
When your done, send an email to giving them a
list of two or three days, and the blocks of time on those days between
the hours of 9 and 1130am and 1-3pm when you are available, and we'll
set up an appointment to go over everything with you.
Hope the quarter is going well,
Bio Advising

Subject: [Biology-U-L] Internships available for ecological study of
Devereux Slough
Message-ID: <478FE4FF.2010207@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
Field researchers needed:
Two internships are available as part of a long-term monitoring and ecological
study of the Devereux Slough ecosystem. Devereux slough, located at the
University managed Coal Oil Point Reserve (Sands Beach) is a seasonally flooded
coastal wetland. During the past fifty years, expanding agricultural and urban
development has significantly altered the slough system. Such alterations have
caused an increase in sedimentation to the system, an increase in water
temperature and a decrease in dissolved oxygen. To investigate the changes in
slough parameters, this study focuses on vegetation,
invertebrate and fish species diversity and abundance, hydrological
characteristics such as oxygen, salinity and temperature measurements and
nutrient inputs.
The internship will consist of assistance in weekly sampling of the above
mentioned parameters. This includes fish seining, sampling of invertebrate
composition, monitoring of water quality and help with processing of samples.
Most of the work will be conducted in the field and give ample opportunity to
gain experience in numerous field sampling
techniques. Water quality samples are conducted on a weekly basis and fish and
invertebrate surveys (which require more time and effort) will be conducted on a
bi-monthly basis. Other responsibilities will include data entry, equipment
maintenance and help with identification of species.
The monitoring project is headed by Cristina Sandoval, Reserve Manager, and Tara
Longwell, Reserve Steward. Interns are required to make a two quarter commitment
but extended quarter participation is encouraged and preferred.
Please direct questions and interest to Tara: longwell at lifesci.ucsb.edu

The Health Professions Association is proud to present
The 8th Annual Health Conference
When: Saturday, February 3, 2008
Where: HSSB Courtyard
Time: 9:30-5:30pm
The Health Conference is an all-day event where speakers of different
medical backgrounds talk about their personal experiences with
medicine and health care. The HPA is working hard to ensure that you

in and by attending this event, you will have a chance to interact
with health professionals, admissions officers, current medical
students, etc.
This is truly a rare opportunity for students to interact on a
personal level with so many highly trained professionals from all over
California. It will also be a good chance to join the HPA if you have
not done so already and would like to.
If you have never considered a career in health care I strongly
encourage everyone, from freshmen to seniors, to come to this event as
it might convince you to give a health profession a try. Invite your
friends. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Feel free to email me

Hello Everyone!
The Pre-Dental Organization has more exciting upcoming events for this
quarter!
Mary Lynch, who is an Assistant Director from University of Pacific
School of Dentistry is coming down to our university to give us a
presentation about their dental school* . *Following up with the
presentation is time for Q&A for any specific questions you may have
with University of Pacific.
I highly encourage anyone interested to show up to this meeting because
this is a very helpful meeting for those applying to dental school in
the future, but also because your attendance gives them a representation
about our university. Here's a little inside tip I would like to share
with you. According to last year's presentation, "UCSB is one of their
_*TOP** 10 feeder school*_". We should take pride in this and represent
our university.
So I would like the following....
1)We'd love a big turn out and need to know how much food to order, so
please, please, please check your schedules and respond to this email ASAP!
2)Spread the word if you know other interested Pre-Dent's and have them
confirm the attendance by e-mailing back.
3)Dress to impress. Try to dress up nicely so we can show Mary Lynch
that we appreciate her coming down to our university.
We hope to hear from you soon!

Hi,
The Santa Barbara Zoo will be participating in the National Wildlife
Federation?s *Frogwatch USA* frog and toad monitoring program. We are
currently in the process of recruiting volunteers for this citizen
science project.
Frogwatch USA. Volunteer for Frogwatch USA
Contribute to frog research with as little as 20 minutes a week!
Training will take place on Thursday, February 28th at 4:30pm -- 7:00pm
This year volunteers and staff at the Santa Barbara Zoo will be
participating in the National Wildlife Federation's Frogwatch USA frog
and toad monitoring program. The program involves listening for the
intensity and diversity of frog and toad calls for a few minutes after
sunset in any of Santa Barbara's many freshwater sloughs, ponds,
streams, or even in your own backyard.
As part of the Santa Barbara Zoo's Leap Day Celebration we will be
hosting a training session on Thursday February 28th from 4:30-7:00 to
help volunteers become comfortable with identifying frog calls and
reporting their data.
For more information on Frogwatch USA please visit the National Wildlife
Federation website www.nwf.org. If you are interested in participating
in the program with the Santa Barbara Zoo contact Piper Presley at (805)
962-5339 ext. 49 or email at ppresley at sbzoo.org.

Subject: Snowy Plover Docents Needed!

Please distribute widely.
These tiny shorebirds need your help!
Make your trip to the beach a more eventful experience by volunteering or
interning for the Snowy Plover Docent Program. The next volunteer
training is on Saturday, Feb. 2nd, from 9AM-1:30PM at the Cliff House, Coal
Oil Point Reserve.
The Western Snowy Plover and CA Least Tern are small shorebirds in need of our
help. Habitat destruction and increased human recreation on beaches have caused
dramatic declines in their populations over the past few decades, leading to
their protection under the Endangered Species Act.
The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in August of 2001 to assist
in the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, and to raise
awareness in the community of the importance of the preservation of this
species and its habitat.
The
Docent Commitment is only 2 hours per week after trained.
The SPDP operates at Coal Oil Point Reserve, which lies between Isla Vista and
Ellwood shores near west campus. Our office is located near the beach entrance,
across form the Cliff House. The nearest major cross streets are El Colegio and
Storke Road.

cultural and geologic history while identifying flora and fauna-such as
American Kestrel, Coast Golden Bush, and the Globuse Dune Beetle-that make
their home at Coal Oil Point.
Tours generally occur monthly on the first or second Saturday from 9am ? 11:15am
and the third Sunday from 2pm ? 4:15pm. Tours for groups over five people are
available by appointment. All tours are free and open to the public.
February tours will occur on:
Saturday, February 2, 9am - 11:15am
Sunday, February 24, 2pm - 4:15pm
Registration for tours is required and closes 24 hours before the tour start
time. Tours are capped at 15 people, so early registration is suggested.

?LOCAL IIMPACTS OF CLIIMATE CHANGE?
How the natural world is responding to climate change, and how you can
help to detect these changes.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2008
3:30-4:45pm, State Street Room of the UCEN at UCSB
Focus The Nation ? UCSB Workshop Series C
Come and learn more about the Stewardship Program and our nationwide
partners, the USA National Phenology Network and Project Budburst.
Led by Brian Haggerty, Director of the UCSB Phenology Stewardship Program
All around us, plants and animals are responding to climate change, often by
changing the timing of seasonal events such as flowering or migration. When
biological activities occur at unexpected times, the consequences can
include
population crashes and lower agricultural productivity. This workshop
will inform you
about the links between climate change and plant and animal behavior,
and it will
introduce you to a nationwide campaign with roots at UCSB that invites
the public to
participate in detecting the effects of climate change on the natural world.
The UCSB Phenology Stewardship Program is a growing network of students,
scientists, and educators in the Santa Barbara region who are dedicated
to research,
environmental education, and community outreach for the study of seasonal
biological events and their responses to climate change.
