I am looking for a motivated undergraduate to work with me on
mathematical models used in ecology. The project involves modeling the
population dynamics of organisms competing for space. The work would
primarily take place during summer 2008 (full time), but some
preparatory work would be required in spring. If I find a suitable
student soon, I will be applying for a Worster award which provides up
to $3,000 each for a graduate student and undergraduate student to
collaborate on a research project. The award is highly competitive and
selective; however, funding may be available from a different source to
support an undergraduate even if the award is not received.
The project would involve working with mathematical models analytically,
as well as extensive work with simulating spatial models using Matlab.
Applicants must have completed two quarters of calculus, and taken some
upper division biology classes. Programming experience is beneficial but
not mandatory, and a willingness to learn the necessary math and theory
is necessary. This is an ideal opportunity for a student seriously
interested in proceeding to graduate school, and would provide the basis
for an honors thesis. The undergraduate would be a collaborator (not
just assistant) with a role in shaping the research project and, if
interested, the publication that results from it.
To be eligible for the Worster award, undergraduates must be in an EEMB
major or a College of Creative Studies major in a program roughly
equivalent to an EEMB major. *Students must be continuing on at least
through fall 2008 to be eligible.* From the award description:
"Undergraduates are *expected to complete a senior honors thesis* and
undergraduate promise, experience, and GPA will factor into the decision
for funding. *Undergraduates who will graduate in June 2008 are NOT
eligible* for this award." The deadline for the Worster award
applications is March 2nd .
If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible by e-mail
(buenau at lifesci.ucsb.edu).
