*Become a ForestKeeper Summer Intern!*
* *
*Earn Credits toward your degree!*
*Work hands-on protecting the health of the forest!*
*Have an experience you will remember for a lifetime!*
Sequoia ForestKeeper is seeking three undergraduate students who are
seeking a degree in a relevant field (i.e. Forest Ecology, Wildlife
Biology, etc.) from California Universities to spend the summer in the
Sequoia National Forest performing intensive forest health monitoring.
Interns will have the weekends off, and will be offered weekly food
allowance, mileage reimbursement, and a stipend of up to $2,000 at the
completion of the project. Internship will begin in June and end in
August. Exact dates will be determined by students' school schedules.
The monitoring will include documenting the health of the forest in
areas that have not had any logging or grazing activity compared to
areas that have been managed. Interns will collect information about the
condition of the forest and report back to Sequoia ForestKeeper with
their observations. The findings will be used to determine the
differences between managed and unmanaged forests, such as past fire
behavior, wildlife use, canopy density (shade), watershed health, and
more. This data can be useful to organizations and agencies across the
nation, but most particularly in California, where forests are
disappearing at an alarming rate due to development and logging.
The interns will camp in the forest throughout the summer, moving from
one area to another, as they conduct their monitoring projects. Their
specific monitoring activities will include:
*· Identifying controlled burn projects that went out of control and
killed many trees;
· Monitoring wildlife areas for threatened and endangered species; *
*· Counting and measuring trees and determining canopy cover in areas
that have been clearcut, thinned, and unmanaged;
· Determining from past burned areas whether logged or unlogged areas
are more susceptible to wildfire;
· Testing water and soil quality in different parts of the forest,
logged and unlogged;*
*· And more...*
If you are interested in serving as a Sequoia ForestKeeper Summer
Intern, please write a letter stating your interest and include your
experience with camping, hiking, use of GPS, and other relevant
information. Students with knowledge of GIS systems are strongly
encouraged to apply, but it is not necessary.
