Volunteer or intern for the Snowy Plover Docent Program! The next volunteer training is on Saturday, September 8th, from 9AM-4PM at the Cliff House, Coal Oil Point Reserve. The Western Snowy Plover and CA Least Tern are small shorebirds in need of our help. Habitat destruction and increased human recreation on beaches have caused dramatic declines in their populations over the past few decades, leading to their protection under the Endangered Species Act. The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in August of 2001 to assist in the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, and to raise awareness in the community of the importance of the preservation of this species and its habitat. The program recruits, trains, and organizes volunteers to become Plover Docents. Each docent plays a crucial role in the protection of the plovers by educating beach users about this threatened species and how to use the beach responsibly. Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve. The SPDP operates at Coal Oil Point Reserve, which lies between Isla Vista and Ellwood shores near west campus. Our office is located near the beach entrance, across form the Cliff House. The nearest major cross streets are El Colegio and Storke Road. For more information or to register for the September 8th training, please contact Jennifer Stroh, Program Coordinator, 805-893-3703, 805-880-1195 stroh at lifesci.ucsb.edu _______________________________________________ From biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu Mon Sep 10 14:28:53 2007 From: biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu (Biology Undergraduate List) Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2007 14:28:53 -0700 Subject: [Biology-U-L] Quest Expeditions 2008 - Long term conservation projects Message-ID: <46E5B715.3010606@lifesci.ucsb.edu> >QUEST Underseas work in partnership with local communities and >businesses living off marine resources, to ensure the long-term >survival and protection of some of the world's most endangered marine life. > >Projects offer students the opportunity to experience hands-on >conservation techniques and to be part of a long-term initiative to >conserve these precious marine environments. > >Below are web links to the three marine conservation projects >we run as well as a sample of our long-term terrestrial conservation projects. > > > > >MARINE CONSERVATION > > Mozambique whale shark and manta ray conservation project > > Fiji marine conservation and community project > > Honduras community and marine conservation project > > > >TERRESTRIAL CONSERVATION > > > Bolivia Animal Sanctuary > > > Malawi Wildlife Project > > Brazil Coastal Rainforest From biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu Thu Sep 13 09:37:50 2007 From: biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu (Biology Undergraduate List) Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2007 09:37:50 -0700 Subject: [Biology-U-L] [Fwd: [Fwd: undergrad assistant posting]] Message-ID: <46E9675E.9040208@lifesci.ucsb.edu> please post the attached lab position for undergrads on the biology undergrad email list. Join us this week during UCSB?s ?Discovery Days? activities! One of the many attractive events scheduled include a tour of UCSB?s most precious natural area, Coal Oil Point Reserve (COPR), located near west campus, between Isla Vista and Ellwood. Coal Oil Point Reserve is one of the best remaining examples of a coastal-strand environment in Southern California, the Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve protecting a wide variety of coastal and estuarine habitats. Largely undisturbed coastal dunes support a rich assemblage of dune vegetation and have become a nesting site for the endangered Western Snowy Plover and California Least Tern. In the heart of the reserve, Devereux Slough is a seasonally flooded tidal lagoon that dries out in the summer to form salt flats and hypersaline ponds and channels. A variety of intertidal habitats occur along the sandy beach and the large rocky reef at the point. Thousands of migratory birds visit throughout the year. Coal Oil Point Reserve is part of an Audubon's Important Bird Area (IBA). Get a personal introduction to this sensitive ecosystem by one COPR?s trained tour guides. Groups will be led in a loop around Devereux Slough estuary, with the opportunity to view wildlife that is supported by many of it?s rich and unique habitats.
