About the study:

Serpentine endemic plant species are those species will >85% of
their occurrences on serpentine soil. I am testing the hypotheses
that serpentine endemics are restricted to serpentine soil because
of competition from non-endemic species and that this restriction
varies with climate, such that the degree of restriction is less is
drier climates and more in mesic climates.

Field assistant duties:

The field assistant will maintain 60 30 cm x 30 cm plots once per
month. Maintenance includes: clipping aboveground plant biomass and
    replacing lost/damaged plot markers.

Time commitment: 4-5 hours once a month for at least one quarter.
Ideally, the candidate would be available for the entire academic year.

Desired skills:

· Some plant identification skills

· Good observational skills

· Good communication skills

This will start as a volunteer position with the possibility of turning into research credit for eligible students who continue past fall quarter. Other perks besides credits include: a beautiful drive through the Santa Ynez Valley and spending a few hours a month in beautiful serpentine grassland. A stipend or travel reimbursement is also possible.
