Volunteer or intern for the Snowy Plover Docent Program! The next volunteer training is on Saturday, October 6th, from 9AM-1:30PM at the Cliff House, Coal Oil Point Reserve. The Western Snowy Plover and CA Least Tern are small shorebirds in need of our help. Habitat destruction and increased human recreation on beaches have caused dramatic declines in their populations over the past few decades, leading to their protection under the Endangered Species Act. The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in August of 2001 to assist in the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, and to raise awareness in the community of the importance of the preservation of this species and its habitat. The program recruits, trains, and organizes volunteers to become Plover Docents. Each docent plays a crucial role in the protection of the plovers by educating beach users about this threatened species and how to use the beach responsibly. Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve. The SPDP operates at Coal Oil Point Reserve, which lies between Isla Vista and Ellwood shores near west campus. Our office is located near the beach entrance, across form the Cliff House. The nearest major cross streets are El Colegio and Storke Road. My advisor is Dr. Patricia Holden. We are offering a very unique course and corresponding lab section this quarter -- ESM 219 and 219L - Microbial Processes in the Environment. The lecture class is offered Mon/Wed from 2-3:15, and the syllabus can be found here: http://www.bren.ucsb.edu/academics/course.asp?number=219. The lab is offered Wed mornings from 9-12, and the syllabus is here: http://www.bren.ucsb.edu/academics/course.asp?number=219L. We have few Bren students enrolled in these courses this quarter, and would like to make it available to a small number (4-6) of exceptional biology undergraduates. We are seeking students with a 3.0 or better, and they will also have to fill out a petition to take the class. They can contact me at acorbett at bren.ucsb.edu for more information. A further description is below: ESM219, Microbial Processes in the Environment, is about the most abundant organisms on Earth---microbes. The lab is your chance to learn first hand about this subject. There is no substitute for doing, when learning is the goal! The course exposes you first hand to what microbes are and what they do. Lab exercises are towards learning: Who's there in the microbial world? How do we figure that out? How many are there? What is the diversity of the microbial world? What do those microbes do---i.e. cycle Carbon, cycle Nitrogen, biodegrade pollutants, etc? (You get to watch them in action) How are they, themselves, pollutants and how do we determine that? NOTE: This is an extracurricular course and has not yet been evaluated or approved toward use for any of the undergraduate EEMB or MCDB majors. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Take Care, Jessica MORE INFORMATION: Thank you for your interest in the Clinical Care Extender Program! The program currently operates at Citrus Valley Medical Center in West Covina, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach and* this particular program runs at two hospitals St. John Regional Medical Center*/ *Pleasant Valley Hospital* in *Oxnard/ Camarillo*. I would like to briefly explain the program, how it works, and how you can be involved. The program is designed with two purposes in mind; 1. Help support the hospital staff to increase the quality of patient care and 2. Provide unparalleled opportunities for future health professions students. The program has been up and running for over 8 years now at Citrus and started at St. John?s two years ago, so I am looking for more dedicated, energetic students. We are looking for a full class of 100 CCEs at St. Johns and therefore we need the BEST! This is where you all come in. Before you even set foot in the hospital we will spend *3 days training you*. Topics covered will range from anatomy and physiology to infection control. We will do a lot of hands on training with body mechanics and patient transporting. We will teach medical topics and terminology as well as condition specific precautions. After the training, you will get a department specific training, where you will learn about the unit you will be going to. Upon entering the program you will start out on a basic nursing unit. There, you will get your feet wet in the hospital environment and assist the patient care process. You will be doing hands on tasks, not filing, or paperwork. You will remain there for three months, which is one rotation. At the end of the three months, you will be able to rotate to another department. The departments vary by hospital. Currently some of the departments we have open are Labor and Delivery, the Emergency Department, Mother Infant Unit, Rehab/PT, Intensive Care Unit/ Coronary Care Unit, Radiology, as well as the Operating Room. We will try and open a new department every three to six months. As far as the details for the program I will explain the basics and we can go into more detail when we meet. We ask for a *240 hour commitment* which will be fulfilled by working *one four hour shift a week*. You sign up for your department a month in advance. For example, a schedule for November would have been put out on October 1st and will remain out until October 25th. It is first come, first serve. The shifts are 7 days a week, from 7am-11am, 11am-3pm, 3pm-7pm, and 7pm-11pm. You can come back as many times as you want between the 1st and the 25th and make changes. After the 25th it will be pulled, typed and posted in various places, one being the floor so the nurses and doctors know when to expect you. *Every three months you can rotate to a new department*. If you like the department you are in and the staff also would like you to stay, you may be arranged. We will also have opportunities for leadership team members. I am testing the hypotheses that serpentine endemics are restricted to serpentine soil because of competition from non-endemic species and that this restriction varies with climate, such that the degree of restriction is less is drier climates and more in mesic climates. Field assistant duties: The field assistant will maintain 60 30 cm x 30 cm plots once per month. Maintenance includes: clipping aboveground plant biomass and replacing lost/damaged plot markers. Time commitment: 4-5 hours once a month for at least one quarter. Ideally, the candidate would be available for the entire academic year. Desired skills: ? Some plant identification skills ? Good observational skills ? Good communication skills This will start as a volunteer position with the possibility of turning into research credit for eligible students who continue past fall quarter. Other perks besides credits include: a beautiful drive through the Santa Ynez Valley and spending a few hours a month in beautiful serpentine grassland. A stipend or travel reimbursement is also possible. Interested students should contact Barbara Going bmgoing at ucdavis.edu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The best way to make an informed decision is to get all the facts, talk to a company representative, ask questions and sample materials. A Head-to-Head does just that! UCSB?s Health Professions Association is hosting an MCAT Head-to-Head on Monday, October 22nd at 7pm in Girvetz 1004 to help students make that decision. A representative from each of the major MCAT preparation programs will form a panel to talk about their MCAT preparation course, answer student questions, and provide students with sample materials. We need your help! Volunteer or intern for the Snowy Plover Docent Program! The next volunteer training is on Saturday, November 10th, from 9AM-1:30PM at the Cliff House, Coal Oil Point Reserve. The Watershed Group of the SBC LTER aims to study and understand the relationship between coastal watershed runoff, terrestrial sediments and nutrients, and kelp forest and nearshore ecosystem structure and function. Santa Barbara is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, meaning upwards of 90% of our region's rainfall occurs in the winter months (typically November -- April). The unpredictable nature of storm events in our area, coupled with the project's goal of characterizing nutrient and sediment flows to the coastal ocean, necessitates event-based sampling of storm runoff. Unfortunately, many storms begin at inconvenient hours, requiring us to brave the frigid night air as we diligently collect samples. The amount of sampling we do is entirely dependent on the frequency of rainstorms -- in drier winters there is less intensive sampling, while during wetter El Nino winters there is typically much more. If you're the type of person that really enjoys conducting fieldwork, stomping through puddles in the rain, observing the impressive power of moving water, and just plain tends to like their science with a hint of "wild" on the side, you'll like this job. We do a continuous loop of sampling in Santa Barbara at three sampling sites (Arroyo Burro Creek, Mission Creek, and Rattlesnake Creek), aiming to collect a water chemistry sample every 1-2 hours on the rising limb of the hydrograph (stream level rising) and every 2-4 hours on the falling limb (stream level falling). This means you'd need your own vehicle to make the rounds, for which you will be reimbursed for total mileage driven. If interested in a position with us, please send a brief background of your experience, major, and research interests to Blair Goodridge (bgoodridge at bren.ucsb.edu ). Thanks for your interest!
