Combine with the possibility for staying in the company after graduation. The 20 hours can be distributed over the 5 weekdays in any way matching the class activities, but it is necessary to come to work each morning to do the equipment monitoring. The work hours may therefore be more some days than other summing up to 20 hours per week. Message-ID: <45A3BA5C.1050801@lifesci.ucsb.edu> To graduating seniors and new graduate students in mathematics, computer science, bioengineering, earth science, and ecosystem science. ************************************************************************** The EcoInformatics Summer Institute (EISI) will be held at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest in the Oregon Cascades from June 18-August 24, 2007. EcoInformatics, the integration of mathematics, computer science, and engineering with the study and management of ecosystems, is an emerging science with a critical need for well-trained, interdisciplinary scientists. The EISI will work to fulfill that need through a ten-week undergraduate/early graduate research experience. Through the integration of research and education, effective mentoring, and hands-on experiences at the HJ Andrews, fifteen participants will gain (1) valuable research experience in EcoInformatics and in their own disciplines, (2) four hours of class credit (3) the foundation and opportunities to develop and seek support for their own graduate program, including a peer-reviewed research proposal, and (5) the training to become outstanding interdisciplinary scientists and effective contributors to EcoInformatics. In addition, participants will receive a total stipend of $4,000, from which tuition for the summer class (approximately $700 as of August 2006) will be deducted. Travel, up to $500, for transportation to the Summer Institute will be provided to participants, as well as free lodging at the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest and 3 meals per day for the first and last weeks of the program. The EcoInformatics Summer Institute strongly encourages applications by underserved student populations, including Native Americans, Hispanics, and women, to increase diversity in this emerging field. Please pass on with widest distribution. Coal Oil Point (aka Sand's Beach), part of UCSB's Natural Reserve System, is home to the Western Snowy Plover and the CA Least Tern, threatened and endangered shorebirds that now roost AND breed there after abandoning the beach for breeding for over 40 years. Sands Beach is one of the most beautiful in the world, with views of the coastline up to Point Conception, surrounding Devereux Slough estuary, and backed by the Santa Ynez Mountains. Naturalists have the opportunity to see many species, particularly shorebirds and raptors. Docent shifts are typically a very relaxing experience- docents have the sunshine and fresh air of a gorgeous beach. Those who wish to help protect the plovers and terns or simply want to learn more about them and their sensitive, coastal habitat, have the chance to become more involved. We have a need for docents throughout the entire year. Please help! ***The next COPR Tour and Snowy Plover Docent Training is Saturday, January 13th, 10:00AM-1:30PM*** COPR Tour 10AM- 11AM Open to the public ($10 donation suggested) Plover Presentation/Docent Training 11:30AM-1:30PM Plover Docents are trained to protect adult plovers, (and chicks and eggs during the breeding season), and educate the public about conservation. The tour is open to the public, but both tour and training are required to become a Snowy Plover Docent. Docent shifts are 2 hours per week. There is opportunity for internship credit, community service, but best of all, hands-on experience protecting species that are in peril. To register, contact Jennifer Stroh: call 880-1195 or email stroh at lifesci.ucsb.edu For more information about the Reserve or the Plover Docent Program, visit http://coaloilpoint.ucnrs.org/ Thanks, Jennifer Snowy Plover Docent Program Coordinator ----- End forwarded message ----- From biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu Wed Jan 10 15:58:45 2007 From: biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu (Biology Undergraduate List) Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2007 15:58:45 -0800 Subject: [Biology-U-L] Fwd: New Undergraduate Research at Columbia University Summer Amgen Scholars Program Message-ID: <6.1.2.0.0.20070110155628.020fae90@mail.lifesci.ucsb.edu> >My name is Dixie McCulloch, and I am the program assistant to Columbia >University's new Amgen Scholars Program. Would you like to know what it's like to work in a hospital atmosphere while gaining experience with patients, doctors, and staff in units such as *EMERGENCY ROOM, LABOR AND DELIVERY, OPERATING ROOM, MEDICAL-SURGICAL UNIT, MOTHER INFANT UNIT, PERI-OP UNIT*, *REHABILITATION* and several others? This is an internship unparalleled, where you will find what it is like to actually have patient contact and see if the health care field is for you. If you know this internship is for you, the interview times are listed below. Email me at sjrmcapdrt at copepartnershwt.org and confirm an interview with me. I will then send you an application and a confirmation of your interview, with directions included. As there are four rotations a year, if you can not make this rotation we will begin another rotation in mid-May. I hope to hear from you soon! Good luck with your classes! Take care, Brittany Dixon Assistant Program Director of Recruitment and Training COPE Community Outreach Prevention and Education St. John's Regional Medical Center Oxnard _sjrmcapdrt at copepartnershwt.org _PS. *If you would like to get in this rotation you must be able to attend three mandatory training dates: February 4th, 11th, and 18th. *MORE INFORMATION: Thank you for your interest in the Clinical Care Extender Program! The program currently operates at Citrus Valley Medical Center in West Covina, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach and* this particular program runs at two hospitals St. John Regional Medical Center*/ *Pleasant Valley Hospital* in *Oxnard/ Camarillo*. I would like to briefly explain the program, how it works, and how each of you can be involved. The program is designed with two purposes in mind; 1. Help support the hospital staff to increase the quality of patient care and 2. Provide unparalleled opportunities for future health professions students. The program has been up and running for over 8 years now at Citrus and started at St. John???s two years ago, so I am looking for more dedicated, energetic students. We are looking for a full class of 100 CCEs at St. Johns and therefore we need the BEST! This is where you all come in. Before you even set foot in the hospital we will spend *3 days training you*. Topics covered will range from anatomy and physiology to infection control. We will do a lot of hands on training with body mechanics and patient transporting. We will teach medical topics and terminology as well as condition specific precautions. After the training, you will get a department specific training, where you will learn about the unit you will be going to. Upon entering the program you will start out on a basic nursing unit. There, you will get your feet wet in the hospital environment and assist the patient care process. You will be doing hands on tasks, not filing, or paperwork. You will remain there for three months, which is one rotation. At the end of the three months, you will be able to rotate to another department. The departments vary by hospital. Currently some of the departments we have open are Pediatrics, the Emergency Department and Mother Baby Care Unit, as well as the operating room We will try and open a new department every three to six months. As far as the details for the program I will explain the basics and we can go into more detail when we meet. We ask for a *one* *year commitment*, volunteering for *one four hour shift per week*. You sign up for your department a month in advance. For example, a schedule for November would have been put out on October 1st and will remain out until October 25th. It is first come, first serve. The shifts are 7 days a week, from 7am-11am, 11am-3pm, 3pm-7pm, and 7pm-11pm. You can come back as many times as you want between the 1st and the 25th and make changes. After the 25th it will be pulled, typed and posted in various places, one being the floor so the nurses and doctors know when to expect you. *Every three months you can rotate to a new department*. If you like the department you are in and the staff also would like you to stay, you may. One of your 4 rotations, you are required to do "extra hours". It is another 4 hours a week, for a total of 8 hours a week. These hours are for the hospital to use you however they need you. Most students choose to do these hours during the summer. In the past they have been projects like FIT testing, where CCEs taught the staff how to properly wear the correct size mask for isolation rooms. We also have had extra hour projects for patient relations where CCE checked on new patients within 6 hours of admit time to see if anything was needed. CCEs have also done pain management surveys. We will also have opportunities for leadership team members. I will explain those opportunities during the training. This is going to be an amazing experience for everyone involved and I hope all of you are interested in becoming a part of it! I look forward to hearing from you all. Please let me know if you have any questions. *The next step is for you to sign up for an orientation/interview*. It will possibly be in a group setting and will last about 1 to 1 ?? hours. During this session you will learn everything about the program and will have a chance to ask questions. You will also have an application which should be filled out prior to the interview which you will hand in and then participate in a group interview. Your name and email address will be added to the distribution list. Please check out the dates below to sign up for an orientation. The orientation dates listed below are for St. John???s in Oxnard and Camarillo. If you are interested in any other location (Citrus Valley Medical Center in West Covina, HOAT Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, or Palomar Pomerado Health in Escondido) please contact Gandhi Huerta at gheurta at copehealthsolutions.org . You can sign up for an orientation by sending an email to sjrmcapdrt at copepartnershwt.org . Make sure to include your first and last name, a phone number where you can be reached, your active email address, and the date and time of the orientation you want to attend. Support for this opportunity was provided by UCSB's Shoreline Preservation Fund. If you have a keen interest in marine mammals and a passion for our environment, this is for you! All will be trained by Michael Smith, project coordinator, and current GWC Supervisors. Interns will participate on the observation team as Supervisors on site to locate and identify marine mammals and to record data. ? 60 hours with a stipend of $500 ? Priority will be given to availability through the conclusion of Gray Whales Count: May 13, 2006. Hours are flexible, but must be scheduled. This is the third year of this valuable research. The intent is to establish baseline data on the migration through the nearshore of the Santa Barbara Channel. The project has become urgent because there is a proposal to renew and to expand drilling from Platform Holly, offshore of Coal Oil Point. *_Please contact Michael Smith: grays-n-blues at cox.net_* _______________________________________________ BIOnews mailing list BIOnews at lifesci.ucsb.edu https://www.lifesci.ucsb.edu/mailman/listinfo/bionews -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Coal Oil Point Reserve is located just west of UCSB and Isla Vista and is an ecologically important area that is home to a number of endangered and threatened species. This Saturday will be planting natives, removing non-native plants, and maintaining previously planted areas. This is a great opportunity for all community members who want to improve water quality and the local habitat for all the critters that live here! We will meet at 9am at the creek crossing along Venoco Road. Venoco Rd. is an unmarked road off of Storke Rd located between Phelps Rd and El Collegio. It has a white metal gate at its entrance and is in between the West Campus Family Housing and Ocean Meadows Golf Course. Please park on the right side of the road (off the road), past the Arizona Crossing (where the creek goes under the road). We suggest carpooling to cut down on the number of cars on site. Tools, gloves, water and snacks will be provided. If you plan to join us, but have never been here before please email Tara at longwell at lifesci.ucsb.edu and I will send you a map. ***The next COPR Tour and Snowy Plover Docent Training is Saturday, Feb 2nd, 10:00AM-1:30PM*** COPR Tour 10AM- 11AM Open to the public ($10 donation suggested) Plover Presentation/Docent Training 11:30AM-1:30PM Plover Docents are trained to protect adult plovers, (and chicks and eggs during the breeding season), and educate the public about conservation. The tour is open to the public, but both tour and training are required to become a Snowy Plover Docent. Docent shifts are 2 hours per week. There is opportunity for internship credit, community service, but best of all, hands-on experience protecting species that are in peril. To register, contact Jennifer Stroh: call 880-1195 or email stroh at lifesci.ucsb.edu For more information about the Reserve or the Plover Docent Program, visit http://coaloilpoint.ucnrs.org/ Thanks, Jennifer Snowy Plover Docent Program Coordinator ----- End forwarded message ----- From biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu Tue Jan 30 11:46:48 2007 From: biology-u-l at mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu (Biology Undergraduate List) Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 11:46:48 -0800 Subject: [Biology-U-L] American Cancer Society Relay for Life In-Reply-To: <45BF9900.9020207@lifesci.ucsb.edu> References: <45BF9900.9020207@lifesci.ucsb.edu> Message-ID: <6.1.2.0.0.20070130114132.0649b890@mail.lifesci.ucsb.edu> At 11:14 AM 1/30/2007, you wrote: Hello everyone: As adviser to the UCSB student affiliate to the American Cancer Society, I wanted to let you know of the upcoming Relay For Life event that will take place on May 19-20 at the USCB track. Again, please feel free to forward this information to any students looking for a paid research internship in the coming summer. If you or your colleagues are teaching undergraduate courses I urge you to make an announcement encouraging students to pursue these opportunities! We would be pleased to answer any questions you may have and provide you and your students with assistance in looking into and applying to these programs.
