I work at the Longs Drugs store on 1109 State Street (intersection: State Street and Figueroa) and my manager is looking for more people to hire on as pharmacy clerks. Any availability during the week would be great! The store hours are M-F 9-7 and Sat-Sun 10-6. The positions that are available are all pharmacy clerk positions, which entail serving customers and typing up prescription labels, among other tasks. Working in the pharmacy is really great experience and, since this particular store is pretty small compared to many of the other pharmacies, it is much easier to learn a lot about pharmacy throughout the shifts. Also, Both pharmacists on duty are UCSB alumni and went to UOP for their Pharm. Ds. and are flexible in scheduling around school-related commitments. If you're interested in a position as a pharmacy clerk at Longs, please call Longs at (805)564-3267 and ask for the manager, Adam Horn. Also, if you have any other general questions about working at Longs, please feel free to ask me. Thanks! On Wednesday, Feb 7, you will receive a request from the campus to fill out a survey on the Internet about your experiences in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology. EEMB is the biology department that offers majors in Aquatic Biology, Zoology, Physiology, and Ecology and Evolution and jointly offers the Biological Sciences major with MCDB. The survey is part of a broader review of the department that will assess our strengths and weaknesses. The resulting recommendations will help us improve undergraduate education for you and future students. Please help the department by completing the survey. It only takes a few minutes and your responses will be completely confidential. The survey will be administered by people outside of the department, and the software will not attach names to the responses, so your answers will remain completely anonymous. Thank you for your help. The faculty and I look forward to learning about your experiences in our department. We value your opinion very highly and look forward to having your input and suggestions as to ways to improve our undergraduate program. Last year's program was a success and we want students to have a similar experience for Summer 2007. Allow me to provide more details: The Integrated Micro/Nano Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (IM-SURE) will host close to 20 junior and senior undergraduates for a 10-week summer research experience in micro- and nanosystems. With a goal of helping students gain the skills and confidence to become independent researchers and make better career decisions, the experience focuses on intensive and direct contact with a large number of faculty and their graduate students through a series of pre-research lectures, hands-on projects, weekly seminars and workshops, an industry field trip, and social activities. Students will also have hands-on prototyping and fabrication experience by providing them direct access to UCI's Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility (INRF), a modern, industrial-grade facility for designing, constructing and testing micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) systems, opto-electronics, fiberoptics and photonics, microfluidics, and hybrid systems. IM-SURE is an REU Site funded in part by the National Science Foundation. The IM-SURE Program is committed to promoting diversity within the fields of science and engineering. Women, underrepresented minorities, and individuals from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. Community College students, who are transferring to a 4-year institution next year, are also encouraged to apply. Applications can be submitted online at the IM-SURE Web site: http://www.urop.uci.edu/im-sure.html Program e-mail address: imsure at uci.edu or urop at uci.edu Deadline to submit application: Monday, March 26, 2007 Deadline to submit supplemental documents: Monday, April 2, 2007 Program Dates: June 24 - September 1, 2007 Program Benefits: $3,000 stipend, free on-campus housing, and travel allowance. Coal Oil Point Reserve is located just west of UCSB and Isla Vista and is an ecologically important area that is home to a number of endangered and threatened species. This Saturday will be planting natives, removing non-native plants, and maintaining previously planted areas. This is a great opportunity for all community members who want to improve water quality and the local habitat for all the critters that live here! We will meet at 9am at the dirt parking lot along the Slough Rd by Coal Oil Point (Aka Sands Beach). The Slough Rd begins at the intersection of Storke Rd and El Collegio. If you are coming from Storke Rd make a right at the intersection onto Slough Rd. If coming from Isla Vista make a left at the intersection. Follow the Slough Rd as it winds around Devereux slough until it dead ends at the dirt parking lot, which is right after the broken bridge. This is our meeting spot! If traveling by bike from IV, follow the bike path that starts at the end of DP and travels along the bluffs (away from UCSB) to the tip of Coal Oil Point. Make a right down the dirt road which leads to the parking lot and all the happy restoration volunteers. If you have plan to come join us and have never been to Sands Beach before, please email Tara at longwell at lifesci.ucsb.edu and I will send you a map. We suggest carpooling to cut down on the number of cars on site. Tools, gloves, water and snacks will be provided. This career fair will be held in the Hotel Nikko San Francisco on April 28-29 (Saturday and Sunday). What is more, the first 200 qualified applicants who apply (and don't have a home in the SF area) get a FREE hotel room! The career fair is sponsored by Apec, a French national employment agency and will attract multinational companies with jobs in Europe, United States, and elsewhere. Companies such as Accenture, Altran, Airbus, Areva, Astra Zeneca, Aventis-Sanofi, Biom?rieux, Danone, EADS, EDF-GDF, Exxon-Mobil, France T?l?com, Freescale, L'Or?al, Masterfoods, McKinsey, Motorola, Proctor & Gamble, PSA Peugeot-Citroen, Renault-Nissan, Rhodia, Safran, Saint-Gobain, Siemens, Thal?s, Total, and Veolia Water have participated as exhibitors in the past. Sungate Ranch in Santa Barbara is interested in having UCSB students from Environmental Studies, the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science & Management or Biology to monitor Oak Trees in our community. Last year we had a bad year for oak worm/oak moth and this year we would like to take an aggressive biological approach with the use of lacewings in managing the pest problem to acceptable levels. It would appear that not all trees have been affected. Knowing why some were effected and others not would aid in improving the life of the burdened trees be it soil conditions, presence or lack of beneficial insects, levels of tannins in trees, presence of toxins from residential use, climate, level of stress to the tree etc? Student(s) will be responsible for weekly monitoring of 70-90 Cork Oak and California Live Oak trees at Sungate Ranch, Santa Barbara, recording findings and presenting findings to supervisor. Also responsible for deploying beneficial insects on trees every two weeks for 3 months which may extend to 6 months. Candidates may be required to work on a 10-foot ladder and will need to provide for their own transportation to local community. The project will commence March 2007 with a 2-4 hours/weekly-time requirement. Student(s) will have an opportunity to work with Pest Control Advisor Ron Whitehurst at Rincon-Vitova Insectaries in Ventura, California. Rincon Vitova Insectaries http://www.rinconvitova.com is the world's oldest commercial insectary producing and distributing insects and other organisms that control pests naturally. Members of the Association of Applied IPM Ecologists (AAIE), Association of Natural Biocontrol Producers (ANBP), California Agricultural Production Advisors (CAPCA). Your expertise and assistance would be greatly appreciated in reducing the oak worm population without the use of pesticides in our community and possibly the County of Santa Barbara. Internship credit may be possible. Enclosed is a sample-spread sheet from Stanford University with regards to monitoring trees and a link to their Grounds Service website. Sands Beach is one of the most beautiful in the world, with views of the coastline up to Point Conception, surrounding Devereux Slough estuary, and backed by the Santa Ynez Mountains. Naturalists have the opportunity to see many species, particularly shorebirds and raptors. Docent shifts are typically a very relaxing experience- docents have the sunshine and fresh air of a gorgeous beach. Those who wish to help protect the plovers and terns or simply want to learn more about them and their sensitive, coastal habitat, have the chance to become more involved. We have a need for docents throughout the entire year. Thanks very much. I am a 3rd year PhD student in EEMB and am looking for undergraduate research assistants (preferably with GPA above 3.0, and with some research experience) to help with my research this coming spring and early summer. I am going to be looking at a number of factors having to do with signaling (song quality and some plumage characteristics), immunity, and hormones in brown-headed cowbirds and red-winged blackbirds. The work will be here in Santa Barbara county (may require some travel around to locate and catch birds) and we'll be working most heavily in the mornings. I'll probably need help through june, but it's hard to gauge how long the breeding season will go for these birds so ideally you are flexible with dates. Work will include catching birds, collecting morphometric data from them (wing length, bill length, mass, etc.) drawing blood from them for hematocrit, immunoglubbulin levels and hormone levels (testosterone, corticosterone, estrogen and others), recording males' vocalizations, challenging the birds' immune systems by injection an antigen into their wing (don't worry--it doesn't hurt the bird), behavioral observations and some animal husbandry among other things. Please contact me ASAP to set up a meeting if you are interested--I'm hoping to settle this in the next few days. Thanks!
