*Rate: * Negotiable depending on
experience and work location.

*Statement of Duties:*

To support the Pacific Outer Continental Shelf Region (POCSR), the
Office of Environmental Evaluation is seeking a student intern to assist
with updating of a biological database for the Environmental Studies
Program. The intern's primary duties will be to (1) search the
literature (scientific journals, technical reports, theses, and other
published and unpublished works) for information on length-weight
regressions of marine fishes found off California, (2) construct a table
with the relevant parameters, (3) link this table into an already
established MS Access database of fish species and densities, in order
to facilitate biomass calculations, and (4) interact with researchers
from other MMS-funded projects to develop database product that best
suits the information needs of the MMS. It is expected that most of the
work will be conducted at the UCSB campus, with approximately one to
three visits to the MMS Office in Camarillo. Additional analyses may be
assigned based on the qualifications of the individual. The candidate
must have knowledge of and experience working with MS Access software
programs and data files. Good language and writing skills and excellent
proficiency with computers are needed. The candidate should have an
intellectual interest in and knowledge of marine and environmental
sciences.

*Time Requirements:*

Starts: ASAP Ends: Negotiable. During School:
Negotiable.

*Candidate Qualifications:*

1. United States citizenship.

2. Knowledge of and experience with Windows-based computers
(word processing & spread sheet software).

3. Ability to organize, program, and maintain MS Access
databases.

4. Ability to perform unsupervised literature searches in
the UCSB library and on the internet.

5. Understanding of regression techniques used in life
history methods.

6. Familiarity with and interest in marine and environmental
sciences, especially marine fishes.

*Background*: The Minerals Management Service (MMS) is the Federal
agency responsible for managing the Nation's mineral resources offshore
the United States and for collecting and disbursing the revenues from
the production of all mineral resources on Federal lands, offshore and
onshore. Regional offices, of which we are one, handle the day-to-day
administration of the MMS program for Federal offshore lands, commonly
referred to as the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The MMS conducts
environmental studies on the potential and real effects of offshore
mineral development, issues offshore mineral leases to companies, and
regulates the operations conducted under MMS permits on the OCS to
ensure that the environment is safeguarded and that the minerals are
extracted in a sound manner. The Pacific OCS Region is responsible for
the safe and orderly development of offshore oil and gas resources from
the Outer Continental Shelf while understanding and protecting the
human, marine, and coastal environments.
