There are several part-time job openings at Longs Drug Store in Santa
Barbara, located at 2973 State Street. These positions are for part
time, or full time clerk positions. This is a great chance to work
and learn about community pharmacy and how it operates. This also
looks great on pharmacy school applications. Come by any time and
pick up an application at the pharmacy, or photo department; or talk
to the store manager Randy or pharmacy manager Anne.

biological
Message-ID: <4612A0E8.7030907@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scholarship amount: $2,000 annual, awarded 15 July
Application deadline: 15 June
Application website: http://www.sbnature.net/scholarship/index.htm
Use of scholarship award : unrestricted
Scope of Saturdaze Scholarships: Awarded to an undergraduate involved
in research in natural history and majoring in a biological sciences
major. Research area must be within one or more of the following
geographic areas: San Luis Obispo County, Santa Barbara County, and/or
northern Channel Islands
Applicant field: Applicant must be an undergraduate student at one of
the colleges or universities within San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara
Counties: Santa Barbara City College, Cuesta College, Allan Hancock,
University of California Santa Barbara, Westmont College, Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo
From the Saturdaze Scholarship website . . .
Natural History is the broadest study of science and attempts to tie
together observations of the natural world into a single interwoven
fabric. As such, the knowledge base of natural history has grown beyond
a single category of study and has been divided into smaller and smaller
and more and more isolated disciplines. It is not uncommon that
professional biologists study a single organism in a laboratory, far
removed from its natural habitat. The Saturdaze Scholarship for Natural
History Research supports the broader view.
Natural History is accessible to all who love and enjoy observing
nature. In his essay on the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin, as a
naturalist, wrote that . . .
"It is interesting to contemplate an entangled bank, clothed with many
plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various
insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth,
and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different
from each other, and dependent on each other in so complex a manner,
have all been produced by laws acting around us."
Who among us has not contemplated nature and been inspired to learn
about the connectedness within diversity? In this sense, natural history
has attracted not only the scientist, but the artist and poet; natural
history has become the romantic science. The romance of natural history
stems from our desire to relate to the natural world, to regain a
connectedness to it, and to preserve its diversity.
Saturdaze has partnered with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
and has funded a scholarship to encourage research that helps to explain
one or another "entangled bank". The Saturdaze Scholarship for Natural
History Research rewards exceptional students attempting to discover
interactions in nature. Saturdaze and the Museum share the goal of
"inspiring a passion for the natural world".

Subject: [Biology-U-L] Coal Oil Point Reserve Habitat Restoration Workday
Message-ID: <461AB1FA.3010309@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
Hello Restoration Volunteers,
Come join us this Saturday, April 14th from 9am-12 noon for a Habitat
Restoration Workday at Coal Oil Point Reserve. Coal Oil Point Reserve is
located just west of UCSB and Isla Vista and is an ecologically important area
that is home to a number of endangered and threatened species. This Saturday
we will be planting natives, removing non-native plants, and maintaining
previously planted areas. This is a great opportunity for all community
members who want to improve water quality and the local habitat for all the
critters that live here!
We will meet at 9am where Slough Rd dead ends at the dirt parking lot by Coal
Oil Point (Aka Sands Beach). Slough Rd begins at the intersection of Storke Rd
and El Colegio. If you are coming from Storke Rd go straight at the
intersection of Storke and El Colegio onto Slough Rd (follow the sign pointing
to University West Campus). If you are coming from Isla Vista make a left at
this intersection. Continue on Slough Rd as it winds around Devereux slough
estuary until the road dead-ends at the dirt parking lot. Look for the yellow
habitat restoration sign and this is our meeting spot!
If traveling by bike from IV follow the bike path that starts at the end of Del
Playa and travels along the bluffs (away from UCSB) to the tip of Coal Oil
Point. Go right down the dirt road which leads to the parking lot and all the
happy restoration volunteers.
If you plan to join us but have never been to Coal Oil Point Reserve before,
please email longwell at lifesci.ucsb.edu and I will gladly send you a map. We
strongly suggest carpooling to cut down on the number of cars on site! Tools,
gloves, water, and snacks will be provided.
To R.S.V.P, or if you have any questions please email or call me at 805.252.4903
or Darlene Chirman at 805.455.3541.
Hope to see you there!

P.S. ? It is best if you wear STURDY SHOES. Pants are also good if you are
walking amongst weeds, but not always necessary. If it is hot and sunny
remember a hat and sunscreen, or layers if it is cold. There are NO BATHROOM
facilities on site.

Apr 10 meeting: St. John's Hospital - Internship for Pre-Health
students
Message-ID: <461BADAF.50404@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
Sorry for the late notice. . . this just came in and the meeting is today
********************************************************
Informational meeting will be held in LSB 1001 Tuesday April 10th at 7pm.
Hello Pre-health Profession students!
My name is* Brittany Dixon *and I am the Director of Recruitment and
Training for the Clinical Care Extender Volunteer Internship Program at
St. John?s Regional Medical Center and St. John?s Pleasant Valley
Hospital. This program provides students who are thinking about working
in the health care field with the opportunity to gain a unique
experience with the health care field that includes direct patient care
in many different areas of the hospital such as the Emergency room,
Labor and Delivery, medical-surgical unit, Rehabilitation, Mother/Infant
Unit, Peri-Operational Unit, and several others. The volunteer will gain
knowledge on the procedures and type of atmosphere each unit has. We
also have an opportunity for students who are interested in healthcare
administration. Volunteers are given 24 hours of training prior to
volunteering so that they are prepared for any experience they will come
upon as a patient care provider. The Clinical Care Extender Program
allows participants to work with all levels of medical staff to better
understand the dynamics of a hospital environment. While volunteering,
students get direct, hands-on experience and guidance from the staff of
the realities of working in the medical field.
Thank you for your interest in the Clinical Care Extender Volunteer
Internship at St. John?s Regional Medical Center and St. John?s Pleasant
Valley Hospital. Orientation/Interview sessions occur every three
months, and are currently being conducted. Please check our website for
specific dates and times:
http://www.copehealthsolutions.org/services/hwt/CCE%20Program/Hospitals/SJRMC/index.html
_Here are the answers to some of our more frequently asked questions:_
*/What exactly is a Clinical Care Extender?/*
Clinical Care Extenders are volunteer interns who participate in
hands-on patient care or in our Executive branch within the hospital
setting. As a Clinical Care Extender, you will become a valuable member
of the patient care team as you help to bathe, feed, change, comfort and
provide company for hospital patients. In our Executive branch you can
engage in our Leadership Team and then on to our Executive Team while
assisting with our Community Education Department in data analysis. You
will help with a myriad of tasks in a variety of hospital nursing units.
As a Clinical Care Extender, you will gain unparalleled exposure to the
medical field and what it really takes to be a Healthcare Professional.
/
*What time commitments does the program require?*/
The Clinical Care Extender Internship requires a 240 hour commitment.
/If you will not be around for an entire year, you should consider
applying at a later time when you are able to commit a year
uninterrupted./ You will attend a mandatory 3-day training course (24
hours) before serving in the hospital. Clinical Care Extenders serve one
4-hour shift each week for 60 weeks. In just over one year, a Clinical
Care Extender completes 240 hours of volunteer service!
/
*What shift times are available?*/
Shifts are scheduled on a first-come-first-serve basis (we will explain
more about this procedure at the orientation). In most departments,
shifts are available 7 days a week from 7am to 11am, 11am to 3pm, 3pm to
7pm, 7pm to 11pm.
*/What departments do Clinical Care Extenders serve in?/*
Clinical Care Extenders currently serve in 12 departments at St. John?s
Regional Medical Center and St. John?s Pleasant Valley Hospital: All
Clinical Care Extenders will begin in a basic nursing department for
their first rotation- Medical Surgical Nursing Unit 3South/3North and
for those who want a more intense experience the Acute Care Unit which
is Telemetry and Oncology. After the first rotation, Clinical Care
Extenders may choose to rotate to any other open department (based on
availability, some departments are waitlisted): Emergency Room (St.
John?s Regional), Emergency Department (St. John?s Pleasant Valley),
Mother and Infant Unit, Labor and Delivery, Rehabilitation, Intensive
Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Catheter Lab, Diagnostic Imaging
(Radiology), Computerized Tomography (CT), Operating Room (St. John?s
Regional), and the Peri-Op/Operating Room (St. John?s Pleasant Valley).
*/How long is a rotation?/*
Each rotation is 3 months long, which means that a Clinical Care
Extender can complete 4 rotations each year.
*/How can I apply to the Clinical Care Extender Program?/*

Hello Everyone!!
PPSA will be having its first meeting of the new spring quarter
this WEDNESDAY at 7:30pm in GIRV. 1112. We will be having an experienced
pharmacist, Bob Fuladi, come give a presentation on pharmacy and its
dynamic career options. He has come for a few years now and has always
been helpful, he's a very informative pharmacist and it's always great
to hear from a working pharmacist about what it's like. His visit last
year was one of my favorite meetings because he is an amazing pharmacist
who really loves his job and he helped me realize that pharmacy is
exactly what I want to do as a future career. I encourage all of you to
come out to hear what he has to say, you will not be disappointed!! =)

Washington Program
Message-ID: <461EB72E.1020107@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
The deadline for UCDC applications has been extended to April 23rd. This is
the final deadline for Fall 2007 and the early application deadline for
Winter 2008.
The UCSB Washington Program offers a special opportunity for upper-division
students to undertake an internship in our nation's capital while receiving
full academic credit for the quarter.
In recent years students have had successful internships at the Supreme
Court, the White House, the State Department, and many Congressional
offices (particularly those of Senators and Representatives from
California). However, not all the internships involve traditional kinds of
government service. Students have interned at the Smithsonian museums, a
wide range of non-governmental organizations and advocacy groups,
private-sector businesses, law offices, brokerage firms, consulting
companies, media outlets, and research laboratories. The UCSB Washington
Program assists students in finding appropriate internships and Program
faculty and staff are committed to working one-on-one with our students to
make their experiences in Washington academically rewarding and
career-enhancing.
Students in all the UC Washington Programs live in a state-of-the-art
residential facility in downtown DC. The building is within easy walking
distance of the Metro subway system, in the beautiful Dupont Circle
neighborhood. The UC Washington Center sponsors a variety of lectures,
excursions, and other activities that are open to all members of the UC
Washington community.
The Washington Program will be accepting up to 31 students for each quarter
of the 2007-08 academic year. You can get information on how to apply from
the UCDC web site, www.ltsc.ucsb.edu/urca/ucdc.php or by contacting the
UCDC Peer at 893-3090 or ucdc at ltsc.ucsb.edu.

Saturdaze Scholarships
Scholarship amount: $2,000 annual, awarded 15 July
Application deadline: 15 June
Application website: http://www.sbnature.net/scholarship/index.htm
Use of scholarship award : unrestricted
Scope of Saturdaze Scholarships: Awarded to an undergraduate involved in
research in natural history and majoring in a biological sciences major.
Research area must be within one or more of the following geographic areas:
San Luis Obispo County, Santa Barbara County, and/or northern Channel
Islands
Applicant field: Applicant must be an undergraduate student at one of the
colleges or universities within San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara Counties:
Santa Barbara City College, Cuesta College, Allan Hancock, University of
California Santa Barbara, Westmont College, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
>From the Saturdaze Scholarship website . . .
Natural History is the broadest study of science and attempts to tie
together observations of the natural world into a single interwoven fabric.
As such, the knowledge base of natural history has grown beyond a single
category of study and has been divided into smaller and smaller and more
and more isolated disciplines. It is not uncommon that professional
biologists study a single organism in a laboratory, far removed from its
natural habitat. The Saturdaze Scholarship for Natural History Research
supports the broader view.
Natural History is accessible to all who love and enjoy observing nature.
In his essay on the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin, as a naturalist,
wrote that . . .
"It is interesting to contemplate an entangled bank, clothed with many
plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various
insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp earth, and
to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each
other, and dependent on each other in so complex a manner, have all been
produced by laws acting around us."
Who among us has not contemplated nature and been inspired to learn about
the connectedness within diversity? In this sense, natural history has
attracted not only the scientist, but the artist and poet; natural history
has become the romantic science. The romance of natural history stems from
our desire to relate to the natural world, to regain a connectedness to it,
and to preserve its diversity.
Saturdaze and the Museum share the goal of
"inspiring a passion for the natural world"
Questions should be referred to scholar2007 at sbnature.net.

This week for our HPA member meeting we will be hosting Cindy Lewis
PhD, a longtime health advisor for medical, dental, and other
healthcare professions. The meeting is on Wednesday April 18th at 6pm
in North Hall 1105 and she will be presenting the first in a three
part series on the current application cycle. Tonight is the self
assessment portion where she will be discussing the application and
how to differentiate yourself from the thousands of other applicants.
The website is listed below and I strongly encourage everyone who is
thinking about applying to any sort of professional school to attend
this informational meeting. And of course there will be the
complementary pizza to keep everyone well fed. Hope to see you there!

Message-ID: <4627D1C8.2090305@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
Dear HPA members and interested students,
Starting this week, we are starting to actively look
for members who are interested in being part of the HPA executive
board for next year. This a great leadership experience that will not
only give you some insight into how an organization works but also an
extremely important resume building opportunity. You could also just
be interested in creating new events for the HPA members or perhaps
running our annual health conference. There are a variety of positions
available and attached below are the descriptions of our positions. If
you are interested please fill out the application, indicate no more
than three positions that you are interested in, and send the
application in an email to either myself, sgalle55 at umail.ucsb.edu or
our gmail account by our deadline Friday, May 4th. There will be no
execeptions to this rule and we are going to be conducting interviews
as soon as applications are received. Hence it is in your best
interest to turn in an application early as positions might be filled
towards the end of application period.
So please take a look at the application and seize the opportunity to
join the only Health Professions Association executive board at the
University of California, Santa Barbara.

Message-ID: <46291BB2.1080001@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
Ocean Futures Society, a non-profit organization located in downtown Santa
Barbara, directed by the nature film producer and expedition leader
Jean-Michel Cousteau, is looking for a naturalist to run one of our outdoor
education (ecology and sustainability) programs from a ship in Alaska this
summer.
Training: May 30-June 6, 2007 in Alaska
Program begins: June 6, 2007
Ends: August 22, 2007
The program called "Ambassadors of the Environment" is run from a
700-passenger ship, with daily excursions the naturalist will lead, in the
field in the following ports: Seward, Sitka, Skagway, Juneau, Hubbard
Glacier, Ketchikan, Campbell River and Vancouver. Excursions include whale
watching, hiking through muskeg, secondary and primary forest and along
glacial lakes, a rafting trip down Chilkat River, visit to salmon hatchery,
raptor centers, fishing, fish disection, and fish painting, and possibly
biking. Kids age range is mixed: 10-17, parents often join our activities
because we have fun! Two naturalists work together, with groups of 30 kids
max.
1.5 days out of seven days will be spent onboard during which the naturalist
will run ship-based natural science activities such as a microscope lab
(plankton, glacial ice). The naturalist will share a spacious passenger
cabin with one other naturalist (full bath included). Naturalists will dine
with other crew members.
Work day hours vary. Generally begin with 9am morning activity (3 hrs), 1
hour break for lunch, afternoon activity (3-4 hours) with a 2-3 hour dinner
break, and 2 nights of 7 there is an evening activity lasting 1-2 hours.
Naturalists work Monday - Sunday with one of those days starting at 1:30 pm.
Pay is $500-$600 per week with all food and lodging plus transport to and
from Alaska, included.
We require that the naturalist have a degree in environmental or natural
science. Must thrive working with kids and teaching outdoors in all weather
conditions (rains a lot in Alaska). Should have experience in environmental
or natural science education. Should not be prone to sea-sickness. Should
enjoy days full of physical activity outdoors. Should have a good knowledge
base in basic ornithology, geology, zoology, marine biology/ecology, and
forestry. Should be comfortable with the idea of living on a ship, with 700
passengers, and 300 international crew. Naturalists will have access to a
gym. Formal attire is required one night per 7 nights. Daily attire onship
is clean and neat, evening attire is slightly dressy. Naturalist will need
their own rainpants & coat, hiking shoes, day pack, and outdoor wear. Should
have a passion for nature, working with people, and travel.

*Application Deadline: 25 May 2007*
The City of San Diego is accepting applications for a Marine Biologist
position with our lab (see attached). If you wouldn't mind spreading the
news around your facility, we'd appreciate it.
The attached job announcement is posted on the City's web page(
http://www.sandiego.gov/, see City Employment). Although the
announcement advertises only one opening in the Ocean Operations
section, 3 positions will be opening in the next few months: one in
Ocean Operations, one in Taxonomy, and one in the IT-GIS work group.
Additionally, other positions are likely to open over the next 12 months
due to retirements.
The applicant pool will be used for openings that occur over the next
two years. Consequently, if you know of anyone looking for a job/career
in Marine Biology, whether their interest be field work, data analysis,
or taxonomy/ecology, we may have something to offer him/her over the
course of the next year or so.

Subject: [Biology-U-L] Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times
Message-ID: <463641B2.1010905@lifesci.ucsb.edu>
Greetings,
My name is Cameron Malone and I am a 4th year student here at UCSB.
Last summer I got involved in Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.
For those of you who don't know CRMfGT is a camp for children who have
or had cancer and their siblings. It's a safe place where they can go
fun and just be kids, and forget about all their troubles at home. It
really is a great time for all involved. I've already been to 3 camps
and I'm going back for another this weekend. The reason I am telling
you about this is that the Camp staff are coming here to UCSB to hold
interviews for counselor positions during the summer on _*May 9th*_.
There are 6 different summer camps throughout the summer and two kinds
of counselors. You can be an activity counselor, or a cabin
counselor. There are pros and cons to each, the activity counselor
gets to see all the kids at the camp at one point during the week, but
doesn't get to know them too well. The cabin counselor, on the other
hand, gets to know around 10 of the campers really well throughout the
week. Camp is an awesome experience and I totally recommend it. So
if you are at all interested come out on _*May 9th at 7PM*_ to the CAB
office to interview. If you have any questions about camp or the
interview process feel free to e-mail me (c_malone at umail.ucsb.edu) and
I'd be happy to answer any of your questions. You can also check out
the website at www.campronaldmcdonald.org. Thanks for your time and
have a great day!
