Looking for an EEMB course to round out your fall schedule? Space is
still available in
*EEMB 117,** Flow in Aquatic Ecosystems
3 units
** *
Aquatic organisms live in challenging environments. Their morphometry,
ability to capture food and find mates depends on the flow environment.
Aquatic ecosystems similarly depend upon flow as it determines fluxes of
nutrients critical for growth, larval dispersal, food supply to attached
organisms, and light for growth. In this course, we survey basic
principles of hydrodynamics critical for understanding impacts of flow
on organisms and ecosystems. We review case studies of physical-
biological coupling in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal and open
ocean environments. Instruction in the use of Matlab, a high performance
computing and graphing language, is provided and includes problem
solving for better understanding of key concepts.
Prerequisites: EEMB 142ABC and 2 quarters of calculus (3AB or 34AB)
Lecture is held in North Hall 1109 M-W from 10-10:50 and laboratory is
held on Wednesday from 12-3 in Psych. 1805.
