Since most of the runoff occurs during the rainy season from November through April and because rain storms are intermittent, the time spent processing samples are irregular. Other tasks, such as preparing sample bottles and analyzing samples are more regular. The job will phase in with less time in October and more time in November and beyond. The assistance needed is focused on processing of stream water samples. Water samples brought to the lab must be filtered within a few hours for dissolved nutrients and particulate matter. This requires standing at a lab bench and transferring water to filtering funnels then to bottles and finally to tubes for analysis. For particulate matter, filters are collected and transferred to petri dishes for subsequent analysis. Some storms will require measurement of total suspended solids, which involves filtration onto a preweighed filter, which after oven drying, is weighed again on an analytical balance. Other tasks include bottle washing and labeling and data entry onto spreadsheets. During rainy season, large numbers of samples are generated, hence the work can be repetitive. Sands Beach is one of the most beautiful in the world, with views of the coastline up to Point Conception, surrounding Devereux Slough watershed, and backed by the Santa Ynez Mountains. Naturalists have the opportunity to see many species, particularly shorebirds and raptors. Docent shifts are typically a very relaxing experience- docents experience the sunshine and fresh air of a gorgeous beach. Those who wish to help protect the plovers and terns or simply want to learn more about them and their sensitive, coastal habitat, have the chance to become more involved. We have a need for docents throughout the entire year. Please help! ***The next COPR Tour and Snowy Plover Docent Training is Saturday, December 2nd, 10:00AM-1:30PM*** COPR Tour 10AM- 11AM Open to the public ($10 donation suggested) Plover Presentation/Docent Training 11:30AM-1:30PM Plover Docents are trained to protect adult plovers, (and chicks and eggs during the breeding season), and educate the public about conservation. The tour is open to the public, but both tour and training are required to become a Snowy Plover Docent. Docent shifts are 2 hours per week. There is opportunity for internship credit, community service, but best of all, hands-on experience protecting species that are in peril. For the past four years the UCSB Shoreline Preservation Fund has awarded grants to the Land Trust that have made possible the restoration of close to an acre of land at the Coronado Butterfly Preserve in the Ellwood neighborhood of Goleta. Over 5,000 native plants representing forty species have been planted, and over forty UCSB students have participated in the projects. With funding for another year, the contractor and crew will transform about 1/4 acre of non-native weeds into thriving, self-sustaining coastal sage scrub, grassland and oak woodland plant communities. The internship will provide students training in vegetation monitoring, native plant propagation, methods of eradication of non-native weeds, installation of nursery stock and project maintenance. Work will take place every Monday during Winter quarter and into Spring quarter as needed. Morning and afternoon shifts are available to accommodate any class schedule. Interns will be paid a $250 stipend at the completion of thirty hours of work. Students may instead earn one unit of academic credit through the Environmental Studies program or EEMB and Geography department internship programs. Volunteers are always welcome. Site work will begin as soon as the crew is hired and hopefully before the next rain, so if you are interested please call Jason at 569-5429. Thanks!
