About the Facility

The Life Sciences Computing Facility (LSCF) is a multi-disciplinary laboratory funded by the College of Letters and Science to provide resources for the instructional missions of the departments of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology; Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology; and Psychology at UC Santa Barbara. Its mission is primarily focused on undergraduate instruction with the goal of providing a platform for state of the art scientific research methodology to be incorporated in the undergraduate curriculum.

The LSCF consists of two teaching labs and a computer room for drop-in use. Each room has a Dell 5310n printer and Dell Optiplex GX620 PCs. These computers have 3.40 GHz Pentium D processors, 1.0 GB RAM and 17” LCD panels. The computers in the lecterns in the teaching labs are additionally equipped with video capture capability which allows presenters to capture both audio and video during their lectures.

The LSCF is supported by two primary servers: mentor and tutor. Mentor is a SunFire T-2000 server with dual Niagara processors and 8.0 GB RAM. It hosts the majority of the LSCF course web pages as well as providing mailing list services and account management for the Perception quiz server. Tutor is a Sun X-4200 server with dual Opteron processors and 8.0 GB RAM. It hosts a subset of the LSCF course web pages and hosts the Perception quiz server.

The operations of the facility are managed by Instructional Computing (IC). For more information about the lab, see our Contact Information page.
